As children get older, they should be given more responsibility.
We use the following 5 methods to help children gain confidence and become more responsible.
- We make lists together
we can create a list together with the children of tasks that they should be able to do alone, such as getting dressed or storing their toys. When creating this list we obtain commitment from the kids that they can actually do this and this will help them to perform better when they know what is expected from them. - We do not expect perfection
because children are still figuring out their motor skills, errors will happen and as they practice their new skills, there will be errors. - We allow enough time
children tend to need more time to complete tasks compared to experienced adults. For example, getting dressed is complicated, but the more they carry out the task, the quicker they will get and the more proud of their achievements they will be. - We develop routines
children need routine to help them understand and handle their responsibilities. If their daily schedule is constantly changing, they will get confused. We make it clear to them when they have to complete specific tasks. For example, we explain that their toys should be stored away before bed. As bedtime approaches, we remind the children to clean up before putting on their pyjamas. - We offer praise
children love to be recognised for their achievements. We offer praise and recognise each achievement, especially if it is something which was found to be complicated previously. The children will use these problem-solving skills to tackle new situations with ease.
